Daily Discovery: Dent May – Warm Blanket

dent-may-warm-blanket
Summer is just about to wrap up, which is why it’s unfortunate Warm Blanket didn’t arrive in our laps about two months ago. The Paw Tracks artist (a record label run by members of Animal Collective and Carpark Records) has been releasing vibrant pop tracks since about 2009.

His material lies within the same kind of self-aware kitsch that makes Ariel Pink so endearing. However, the record’s skeletal sound instantly recalls Brian Wilson’s writing, and May’s whimsical vocal acrobatics hammer through that feeling.

Dent May takes a jovial, simplistic songwriting approach to reflect his similarly simple perspective towards love and relationships. “Let Them Talk” is a defiant ballad for love in the face of adversity, for example. It’s not a complex record by any means, but Warm Blanket has enough pervasive earworms to make for a charming post-summer listen.
