The University of North Florida’s Spring Commencement took place May 1 at the UNF Arena and consisted of three separate ceremonies. The number of degrees awarded to students included 1,548 bachelor’s degrees, 216 master’s degrees and 34 doctorate degrees.

One of the awards given out was a posthumous bachelor’s degree to Garth Sangree in mechanical engineering. The College of Computing, Engineering and Construction awarded the degree to Sangree’s father, Mark Sangree, on his behalf and the crowd in the arena broke into a standing ovation.

Sangree, a 22-year-old UNF student known around campus, died in January after he went kayaking off of Jacksonville Beach.
