An UNF indoor track athlete was hit by a truck carrying a trailer on Friday, according to source close to the team.

Manny Velasquez, a junior, finished his one mile race with a time of 4:23.25 and during his cool down period was struck by a truck and dragged into a nearby parking lot.

Teammates found Velasquez, during their warm up for their 5K race.

Velasquez is currently in the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

He suffered a fractured pelvis and collarbone and will need skin grafts on his legs, along with reconstructive knee surgery.

Outpour of support can be seen on Velasquez’s Facebook. A post from Velasquez’s Instagram expressed thanks for all those who checked on him during his time in surgery and the ICU, and said it would “take more than a truck and a trailer to take me down!”

Spinnaker reached out to UNF Athletics and they declined to comment further.
