Baseball team goes 3-0 against Fairfield

The UNF baseball team beat Fairfield University three times this weekend to bring its record above .500.

The Ospreys beat the Stags 6-3 and 7-4 on Saturday, March 7. They also won 11-2 Sunday morning, March 8.

In the first game on Saturday, UNF was down 3-1 after six and one half innings, but an explosive bottom seventh resulted in five runs for the Ospreys. First, Donnie Dewees, redshirt sophomore, doubled to left center, bringing in Alex Bacon, Corbin Olmstead and Patrick Ervin. That put the team up 4-3.

Keith Skinner then hit a double to drive home Dewees for the run. Trent Higginbothem applied the icing to the cake by singling to left, bringing in Keith Skinner to make it 6-3.

Later in the day, the Ospreys brought home their second come-from-behind victory. Fairfield was up 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but once again UNF strung together a solid offensive performance.

The Ospreys’ five runs in the bottom of the sixth led them to another win. To top things off, they scored a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to finish with a final score of 7-4.

The series finale on Sunday was an offensive showcase for UNF. Dewees led the Ospreys at the plate with four runs and three RBIs. He also had one home run and two stolen bases.

For the second game in a row, the Ospreys scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Fairfield never even came close — the Ospreys took the game 11-2.

Donnie Dewees’ solid performances over the weekend and other games this week were good enough for the Atlantic Sun Conference to name him A-Sun Player of the Week. During the week, Dewees was on fire, hitting .522. He also has five triples on the year, which is only two away from the UNF record for triples in a season previously set by Tyler Marincov two years ago.

The Ospreys return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 11 at 6 p.m. as they travel to Statesboro, Ga. to take on Georgia Southern.
