The man driving in the car crash that killed one UNF student and injured two others in 2013 was sentenced to 21 years in prison on Feb. 17.

Former student Sean Franke, 24, was found guilty of driving under the influence-manslaughter and two counts of driving under the influence with serious bodily injury.

He was sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter and three years each for DUI with serious bodily injury.

In 2013, Franke was driving a silver Dodge truck at 12:50 a.m. when it veered off of Beach Boulevard and hit a large overhead sign post as it approached the intersection with Kernan Boulevard.

Dara Kusiv, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene while her boyfriend, Jacob Materia, and friend Samantha Kasten were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. They have since recovered.

An investigation revealed that Franke had a blood alcohol level of .178 and that none of the passengers were wearing seat belts.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Franke turned himself in on June 16, 2013 and was booked by the Duval County Jail.

Franke and Materia were members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and Kasten and Kusiv were members of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Franke was last enrolled at UNF Dec. 7, 2012.
