A man charged with killing a UNF student in a home invasion will serve a minimum of 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and armed burglary.

Jarod Miller broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home (Lindsey Varner) and shot Nicholas Hare in August 2015. Police said Miller drove from Pensacola to Jacksonville to confront his ex-girlfriend. Miller and Varner dated for almost a decade before she ended the relationship in 2012, police said.

Miller forcibly entered his ex-girlfriend’s home, shot Hare in the bedroom, then attempted suicide. Miller’s ex-girlfriend was able to flee the home. He was in critical condition, but recovered. Police found duct tape and tie straps at the scene, which Miller bought at Walmart 45 minutes prior.

Hare was a 34-year-old civil engineering major from Jacksonville. He was given a posthumous degree by the university in May.

Jarod is the worst human being. His parents should be ashamed. His brother Clay is a horrible human as well. Jarod is a rapist, and a murderer. I hope he dies in prison or kills himself, but he already tried and only shot half his face off. I wish Jarod would have the opportunity to read this. Go to sleep tonight knowing that, other than Nicholas, your victims are living happy lives glad that you won’t walk free until you are in your 80’s if you last that long. The world is better with you incarcerated like an animal.
