The sound of country music and the smell of fresh hamburgers and french fries filled the air surrounding the Osprey Plaza Tuesday night during the annual Summer B Cookout.

Students from all walks of their college career joined in the festivities. It was reminiscent of Market Days, but had the added flare of free food and live entertainment.

Greek life as well as various clubs and organizations lined the plaza, engaging passersby with freebies such as candy, cozies, clothes and even a game of Jumbo Jenga.

Campus Life brought in the country duo Dave and Whitney to perform as students mingled. The staff also brought in a bounce house and inflatable fair games, such as a baseball game with a plastic bat and baseballs.

Student’s laughed with each other as they put on goofy glasses or fuzzy hats and pose with duck faces and peace signs at the photo booth to capture the memory.

Spinnaker caught up with Israel Fontoura, a freshman graphic art major and Boca Raton native, who said he is excited to meet new people at UNF.

“I’m most excited about meeting other people,” Fontoura said. “Since Jacksonville is kind of like North Florida, you have people coming from all different states and different parts of Florida.”

Freshman Shiyi Hu, an international business major who is originally from China, said she is excited to meet new people as well. She said she liked the atmosphere of UNF and was excited to attend events such as the Summer B Cookout.

While many freshmen get a head start on earning credits by taking Summer B classes, the semester is also an opportunity for graduating seniors to have fun before the big day.

David Sherman, a sixth year accounting major, said he had just finished class when he and some friends stopped by the celebration.

“Events like this are pretty cool,” Sherman said. “They have like food, and hanging out and music. I hope [the Campus Life staff] do something more like this.”

He also had some advice for freshman. “It’s hard for young kids to know what they want to do. I would say best bet being a sixth year is just enjoy it,” Sherman said. “Enjoy your time here.”
