Ospreys Finish in Fourth: Phelan tied for second.

The UNF Men’s golf team got back on track Saturday with a strong performance to finish in fourth place on the final day of the 2010 NCAA South Central Men’s Golf Regional at Texas A&M’s Traditions Club Golf Course in Bryan, Texas.

The Ospreys turned their game around after a bad performance on day two by shooting a 281 to put them at a 5-under-par 859, to finish the tournament.

The fourth place finish advances the Ospreys to the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee at The Honors Course, June 1-6.

UNF finished 8-strokes back of first place finishers, Texas Tech University, who shot a final round 285 to finish with a 13-under-par 851. The host team, Texas A&M, finished just one stroke back to place second with a 12-under-par 852.

The Ospreys finished just one stroke behind third place finishers Texas Christian University. TCU, who lead after day one, struggled on the final two days while dropping to third place. They concluded the final round with a 290 to finish the tournament with a 6-under-par 858.

The Ospreys were the last team to finish under par for the tournament. The University of Georgia and Baylor University finished tied for fifth place, 10 strokes back of UNF with a 5-over-par 869.

Jackson State University ran away with last place, finishing the tournament with a 119-over-par 983. The closest team to JSU was Georgetown University, who finished 13th with a 51-over-par 915.

Every Osprey turned in a final round score of par or better.

UNF freshman standout, Kevin Phelan, finished the tournament in a second place tie with Ignacio Elvira of Texas A&M. Phelan shot a final round 2-under-par 70. The score put Phelan at 8-under-par for the tournament, just one stroke behind Georgia’s Russell Henley, who finished at 9-under-par to win the tournament.

Osprey sophomore Sean Dale, who came in to the final day tied for 20th, shot a final round score of 3-under-par which bumped him up 10 spots, finishing in 10th place for the tournament with a 3-under-par 213.

Osprey senior J.C. Horne put up a red number on the final day while shooting a 1-under-par 71 to finish tied for 23rd place with at 3-over-par for the tournament.

Osprey sophomore Joe Byun finished just one stroke back of teammate, Horne. Byun, who also shot a 1-under-par 71 on the final day, finished the tournament at 4-over-par and tied for 27th place.

Osprey senior Jordan Gibb finished in a tie for 43rd place. Gibb shot his second even par round of the tournament to finish with a 9-over-par 225.
