Police Beat: August 2014

The following information is according to University of North Florida Police Department reports.

Missing person found on campus

A 47-year-old sleeping on campus was found to be a woman who had been reported missing for three days. On Aug. 10, a UNFPD officer observed the woman sleeping on the sidewalk at Kernan Blvd. and Osprey Ridge Rd. at about 1:21 a.m., then made contact with her in fear of her safety. The officer tried to wake her several times, saying “police” loudly, and she woke up after a few tries. The officer asked if she was okay and she said yes, and said she didn’t need rescue. When asked where she was coming from, she said she “walked thousands of miles” to get where she was. The officer asked for an ID and she showed him a series of blank checks. After running the name on the checks, the officer discovered the victim was a missing person from a JSO report filed Aug. 7. After JSO was notified, one of their officers responded to the scene and took the victim into his custody to take her back to her residence. According to the JSO report, the woman was diagnosed as bi-polar, and the man living with her said this was the fourth time she had gone missing in the last five months, and she turns up in a different area each time she goes missing.

marijuanaAug. 9 – Tag lights citation uncovers more trouble (UNF Drive and Eco Road)

At 9:22 p.m, a UNFPD officer stopped a driver whose vehicle tag lights were out. The officer asked the suspect for his driver’s license and vehicle registration and after running his information, found the suspect has a warrant out of Cook County, Ga. and they would extradite within 50 miles. The officer had the suspect step out of the car and placed him in handcuffs to detain him. The officer searched the suspect and found a 2.2 gram bag of marijuana and a marijuana roach in his right pocket. After getting verbal permission from the suspect, the officer searched the vehicle and found a grinder with marijuana residue. UNFPD Dispatch notified the officer that Cook County, Ga. did not want to extradite. The officer issued the suspect a Notice to Appear for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, as well as a warning citation for tag lights being out. The suspect was not a UNF student or employee.
