SG Awareness Month aims to beat student apathy, ignorance

Student Government kicked off its Awareness Month with a town hall discussion about student health options in the Student Union Auditorium Jan. 5 at 8 p.m.

Director of Health Administration Doreen Perez, Nurse Practitioner Diane Joyce, Physician Assistant Joe Allen, Chief Medical Officer Fred Beck, Registered Nurse Lorry Mai, and Student Body President John Barnes led the discussion with a group of students who came to learn more about student health.

Joe Whitman, an economics junior, wanted to see what services his health fee covered.

“I wanted to see what all the fuss was about because I don’t have insurance,” he said.

Perez explained that the medical center on campus doesn’t put overhead on their services, charging only for the supplies they must pay to receive.

John Barnes endorsed the student health insurance offered through UNF, fishing through his wallet to find his Blue Cross & Blue Shield insurance card. With it, he isn’t charged a co-pay when he visits the on campus center, and since most services are free, his insurance card would be the only thing coming out of his wallet.

The services that do cost come at prices considerably less expensive than competitors and even other universities, Allen said.

Students don’t have to worry about their visits getting back to mom because UNF doesn’t send billing paperwork, but rather places a financial hold on their accounts if payments aren’t made on time.

“What goes on in Student Health stays in Student Health, just like Vegas,” Perez said.

The town hall discussions will occur every Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. throughout January. Students can speak to the Director of Auxiliary Services Vince Smyth about their parking concerns Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. in the Student Union Auditorium.
