On April 12, students in a senior project class for their information systems class donated six computers to the Sulzbacher Center, Northeast Florida’s largest service provider for the homeless.

The Sulzbacher center provides services to homeless men, women, and children. Services include shelter, food, and educational programs intended to help reintegrate into the community.

Along with the computers, which were donated in part by the CCEC RTS, the students designed volunteer management software to log, track and credit hours volunteered at the center. Later this month, the class will upload and install the software designed specifically for the Sulzbacher center.

The center has been using a paper and pen system that needed a technical boost, said Zack McKee, UNF information systems senior. The software automates the system, instead of paper sign-ins manually punched into excel.

Karthikeyan Umapathy, assistant professor for the school of computing, teaches the senior project class that worked on the project. The senior project class was a two-semester effort.

McKee and other students involved said they gained real-world experience in working with clients, learning what they needed and what needs to be changed, and designing a program that fits those changes.
