The nice guy strategy works if you’re trying to build a team you would want your daughter to marry, but not if you are trying to win games.
UNF’s head coach Matthew Driscoll whistled fervently into the dying minutes of the first round game, attempting to call plays for his players as best as he could, but his acute whistle wasn’t enough to stop the Eagles from taking control, and keeping it.
Guard Parker Smith broke the record for three point field goals made by an A-Sun player in a season, and then promptly disappeared.
“I’ve been working coach all week,” said Beech. “David Jeune got me open, Will Wilson, Andy Diaz all the seniors they were looking for me. I got open shots and I hit them. It was fun.”
After struggling for most of the season, junior forward Charles McRoy posted career highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Ospreys coming off the bench.
“We want to get hot going into the tournament and we were very confident coming into tonight,” Smith said. “It’s very frustrating.”
In UNF’s last three games, there has been a strong showing on the defensive end, but they have struggled to get buckets. UNF averaged 56 points per game in its past five games, compared to its 65 points per game season average.
“You know some people call it the dog days of February, but we call it the dawg days of February,” Driscoll said. “Discipline, attitude wins games. Yes we believe in it and we think we can win.”
Junior Travis Wallace led the team in more than one aspect Saturday night. His energy and vocal leadership kept the team’s head in the game, even when the Ospreys fell behind by 19 points midway though the first half. His presence inside and perfect free throw shooting (6-6) led all scorers with 18 points.
