Tennis continues to dominate the competition

By: Zach Morgan, Contributing Writer

At UNF sits a nationally ranked team and a team that sits atop the standings in the Atlantic Sun Conference, both just so happen to play the same sport.

Both the men and women’s tennis programs are currently on winning streaks; the women have won six straight matches to the men’s four consecutive match wins.

The women boast a 10-4 record including a perfect 5-0 record against A-Sun opponents. On the other hand, the men hold a slightly better record at 14-5, though they’re 4-1 against conference opponents.

Both teams have been playing strong tennis, especially at home. For the women, they have been unstoppable at the UNF Tennis Complex, posting an undefeated record of 6-0. The men, who have been equally impressive on their home courts, have a 9-2 record at home including a win over then No. 42 South Alabama and No. 33 UNC Wilmington.

Both teams have played a tough nonconference schedule this season. Three of the women’s four losses have come against ranked opponents, including the No. 10 and No. 18 ranked teams in the country at the time of their match, Miami and Florida State, respectively.

The men have played an equally tough schedule with three of their five losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents, including the No. 36, No. 57 and No. 44 ranked teams in the country at the time of their match.

The women’s program currently sits atop the A-Sun standings. With only four matches to go, the Ospreys have a chance to make a run at their second conference title in the last three years.

On the other hand, the men’s tennis team is second in the conference standings; however they are No. 56 in the country, the highest ranked team in the A-Sun. Similar to the women, the men have an opportunity to continue their run and go after back-to-back conference titles

Both teams will be at home this weekend as they host two A-Sun opponents. UNF will host Belmont University April 6. The team will then play host to Lipscomb University April 7.
