Top Five Duets

Throw any preconceived notions you have about duets out the window. This list will open your eyes to the sweet and romantic side of male and female interaction. Who knew the sexes could mesh so well?

“Home” by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

Start off by whistling along to this adorable tune with to-and-fro verses of love between Alex Ebert and Jade Castrinos. In sync with the trumpet and tambourine, the down-home sounds of their voices combine to create a romantically fun duet. Its whimsical feel leaves you wanting to skip off into a forest and dance around a fire. Mid-song they even take a break to tell the story of how Ebert fell in love with Castrinos, playfully serenading each other with “While you were sitting in the backseat smoking a cigarette you thought would be your last, I was falling deep deeply in love with you/ And I never told you until just now.” You won’t find a duet much cuter than this.

“Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men” by Regina Spektor & The Strokes

It seems nearly impossible for either of these musical sensations to create anything but absolute magic, but put them together and you have one of the most interesting duets every created. As they sing simultaneously, Spektor’s hypnotic Russian-accented vocals flow smoothly over Casablanca’s notably deep lyrical tone. The twosome sing as if they are oblivious to what the other is saying, yet they manage to combine the complex lyrical composition and catchy rock beat, executing its gloomy feel with surprising beauty. “I don’t want the imprint of your key upon my nose/ You don’t have to tell no one ‘cause no one wants to know.”

“Defying Gravity” by Idina Menzel & Kristin Chenoweth

Here’s one for the Broadway buffs. If you have ever heard of or seen the Broadway musical “Wicked,” you know what I mean when I say this song will give you goose bumps. Not only do Menzel and Chenoweth dish out powerhouse vocals, their dialogue and lyrical mix creates an emotional scene in your mind. If you haven’t seen the play, don’t fret; you can envision it as you listen if you just close your eyes. There is no doubt that this song will move and motivate you to defy gravity with just a press of the play button.

“I Got You, Babe” by Sonny and Cher

I had to include this infamous twosome on the duet list, and not just because my more ‘mature’ mentors asked me to do so. These hippies preach throughout this cheeky ballad about puppy love and the problems that can interfere with a good relationship. But for Sonny and Cher, love endures through the hardest of times. It’s all about the back and forth throughout the sappy, romantic lyrics. “Don’t let them say your hair’s too long/ I don’t care, with you I can’t go wrong.”

“Saw Red” by Gwen Stefani & Sublime

Back in the day when Gwen Stefani was still with No Doubt, and Sublime still had their hands on Bradley Nowell, this beautifully dirty mash-up of music was created.  Gwen’s rough-and-tough vocals add a bit of grunge to the already hectic Sublime tune.  Surprisingly, all of these male to female duets don’t show the ugly, bitter side to relationships that comes easily when the sexes combine. “Everyday I love her just a little bit more/ and she loves me the same.”
