UNF Golf in the Mix: Ospreys end opening round of NCAA Regionals in third.

The UNF Men’s Golf team finished day one of the 2010 NCAA South Central Men’s Golf Regional in third place, Thursday, at Texas A&M’s Traditions Club Golf Course in Bryan, Texas.

The Ospreys, who shot an 8-under-par 280, finished round one just thee strokes behind Texas A&M and TCU, who both shot a 277 to go in to the club house at 11-under-par.

The Ospreys finished the day with a two stroke lead over current fourth place team Texas Tech University, who shot a 6-under-par 280. Following Texas Tech is Wichita State University at 5-under-par, Pepperdine University at 2-under-par, and Auburn University at even par to round out the teams that shot par or better.

At the end of round one it is Jackson State University who sits last in the field of 14, ending the day shooting a whopping 37-over-par 325. JSU has a commanding grasp on last place after finding themselves 22 strokes worse than Georgetown University who is currently in 13th with a 15-over-par 303.

One reason the Ospreys hold the third place spot after day one is the fact that three players including freshman Kevin Phelan, and sophomores Joe Byun and Sean Dale, all shot under par in the opening round.

Phelan, who just days ago qualified for the U.S. Open sectional tournament, finished round one tied for first place with Texas A&M’s Ignacio Elvira, TCU’s Daniel Jennevret, and WSU’s Dustin Garza. Phelan had three birdies a side on his way to shooting a 6-under-par 66.

Byun and Dale both finished the day shooting a 1-under-par 71.

Osprey seniors Jordan Gibb and J.C. Horne were not far off with Gibb shooting an even par 72 for the opening round and Horne coming in with a 1-over-par 73.

The Ospreys tee off Friday morning starting with Horne set to go off the first tee at 9:10 a.m. followed by Gibb, Byun, Dale, and Phelan in that Order.
