The UNF Crisis Management Team is moving all students on campus to the Fountains residence hall in preparation for Hurricane Matthew, according to an email sent to students and staff.

Approximately 270 students will be moved to the Fountains with the help of 45 student staff members and 16 professional Residential Life staff. Shuttle buses will be routed to all residential facilities from 4 to 8 p.m., where they will take students to the Osprey Café, then to the Fountains for the length of the storm.

The move is mandatory, and students are directed to bring bedding, personal supplies, medications and clothes. Students are allowed to bring approved pets on a leash with food.

“The students that don’t live in the Fountains are not allowed in other peoples rooms,” Sharon Ashton, Vice President of Public Relations said. “They’re going to go into the common areas.” This leaves lounge areas with sofas, multipurpose rooms and hallways for the evacuated residents to stay in.

While there are approximately 270 students left on campus, Ashton said that number is constantly changing, and expects that after hearing about the mandatory move to Fountains, many residents will decide to stay somewhere else off campus.

“The Fountains is a secure facility, has an emergency generator, limited food service and numerous rooms without windows,” the email states. University police will be at the residence hall for the entirety of the storm.

The Fountains will have prepared food available for students. Dave Jordan, resident district manager of Chartwells, says 100 cases of water were delivered today, and they’ve prepared hundreds of salad and sandwiches to feed students. This prepared food and other supplies will be free to students.

Business hours for Chartwells’ food establishments across campus vary in the coming days. Ozzie’s will be closed, and students staying in the Fountains will not be able to purchase food from the convenience store and grill.

“We are staying open until midnight at Ozzie’s,” Jordan said. “Tomorrow, there’s probably no chance that anyone will come to work in the hurricane.”

Jordan hopes to reopen Ozzie’s, the café and Pita Pit Saturday morning, weather permitting.
