UNF women’s soccer (2-7) made a second half surge to beat Georgia Southern Eagles (3-5-1) in a 1-0 shutout at Hodges Stadium on Sept. 20. The win ended the Ospreys’ streak of seven straight losses.

The Eagles came out aggressively early in the game, putting the Ospreys on the defensive. Georgia Southern senior forward Nora El-Shami led the game with 4 shots, 2 on goal.

UNF women’s soccer head coach Robin Confer said this was a necessary win. It was UNF’s last game before their conference schedule starts.

“You know I thought we created some good chances,” Confer said. “Sarah stepped up and put the PK away, we were able to preserve the shutout and keep the win. Much needed for this group, working really hard and really earned that moving into conference play.”

At 59:09, UNF’s sophomore forward Sarah Wasser scored the only goal of the game off of a penalty kick.

“I felt some pressure, I knew my team needed this and I knew I could put it in the back of the net,” Wasser said.

UNF would hold defensively for the remainder of the half to seal the victory over the Eagles.

Furman won 0-1, pushing UNF’s loss streak to seven until their fortunes turned on Sunday.

The Ospreys will start Atlantic Sun Conference play against Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida on Sept. 26. at 7 p.m.
