UNF’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department will discuss web safety and the state of the Internet at its Cyber Security Symposium on March 30.

Cyber security is the primary focal point of the forum, including topics such as the Internet of things, UNF student research on cyber security and national concerns regarding Internet safety, according to UNF’s ITS website.

ITS and Chief Information Officer (CIO) Lance Taylor has several tech whizzes scheduled to speak at the symposium, including UNF students and professors, plus an FBI special agent.

UNF assistant professors Dr. O. Patrick Kreidl and Dr. Swapnoneel Roy will guide student research presentations highlighting cyber security.

Signal Processing and Network Science (SPaNS) Lab Research Assistant Patrick Caldwell will present the results of SPaNS lab research on how reputation in human social networks can be applied to other computer networks and enhance cyber security.

IT Security Analyst Jeff Gouge’s research on data cache protection actually highlights the lack of research on how to secure these caches. Gouge is scheduled to explain the importance of keeping data caches safe and how a cyber attacker might compromise a network through its cache.

Alongside UNF students and professors, guest speakers for the symposium will include CEO of Secure Ideas Kevin Johnson, Dean of Research for the SANS Tech. Institute Johannes Ullrich, and Special Agent Shannon Regil of the FBI’s Jacksonville division.

The Cyber Security Symposium will be held in the Herbert University Center at 9:00 a.m. Monday, March 30. Attendance is free, but registration is required.
