UPDATE – 9/21/15 AT 4:25 p.m.

Jarod M. Miller, suspected of murdering UNF student Nicholas Hare, is still in the hospital after an attempted suicide.

On Aug. 28, Miller was involved in a shooting where he allegedly shot and killed Hare, and then attempted to take his own life.

Lindsey Varner, Hare’s girlfriend and the owner of the apartment where the shooting occurred, said Miller was her ex-boyfriend. Varner stated that her romantic relationship with Miller ended three years ago, but he had a hard time dealing with the breakup.

At the time of the murder, Jarod was working at Raw Construction in Jacksonville. As of Sept. 16, Miller is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head at UF Health Hospital in Jacksonville.

UPDATE – 9/18/15 at 3:32 p.m.

Pending approval by the College of Computing Engineering and Construction, UNF plans to honor Nicholas Hare by presenting him with a posthumous degree in civil engineering.

According to Sharon Ashton, UNF will present the degree during the Spring 2016 Commencement Ceremony.


UNF senior Nicholas Hare died on Aug. 28 after being shot by his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Later that night, the suspect attempted suicide.

According to a GoFundMe in Hare’s name, Hare was 34 years old and a civil engineering student in his last year at UNF. Dean of Students Thomas Van Schoor confirmed his enrollment and major.
