Women’s basketball shoots its way to second straight victory

The University of North Florida women’s basketball team picked up its second straight win on Saturday as the Ospreys knocked off USC Upstate 91-73 inside the UNF Arena.

It was all Ospreys (4-11, 2-4 Atlantic Sun) from the get go, as they jumped out in front early with a 15-4 run to open the game. The Osprey were led early by junior guard Brittany Kirkland, who hit three shots from behind the arch in the opening minutes, and sophomore forward Larkira Jones who added six points to start the game.

The Ospreys continued to build their lead and used a 12-5 run to end the first and take a 47-26 lead into halftime. The Ospreys had a balanced attack in the first half, led by Kirkland’s 13 points.

Two three-pointers by sophomore guard Jadhken Kerr sparked a 10-2 Osprey run to open the second half that all but put the Spartans (7-7, 4-2 Atlantic Sun) away.

UNF’s 91-point outburst was the most points they scored all season to this point. The Ospreys had four players in double figures led by Kirkland with 20, Kerr with 14, freshman forward Raneisha Lamar with 13 and freshman guard Jade Givens with 10 points.

The Spartans were led by a dominating performance by senior forward Chelsea McMillan who had a double-double with 34 points and 17 rebounds. Junior guard Kendra Wallace added 15 points for the Spartans.

To say that the Ospreys dominated from start to finish would be an understatement. The Ospreys forced 25 Spartan turnovers and converted those into the 32 points. UNF also controlled the paint, outscoring the Spartans by 10 down low, 42-32. UNF won the rebound battle as well and outscored the Spartans 26-5 in fast-break points.

The Ospreys take the court next on Monday, night as the welcome the East Tennessee State Buccaneers to the UNF Arena at 7 p.m.
