UNF Interfraternity Council hosts “Dunks for Douglas” for Parkland victims

In 10 days, the UNF Interfraternity Council organized Dunks for Douglas, an event that brought together the Jacksonville community in order to help those affected by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

“We have a lot of people within UNF, IFC and just Greek community in general that are alumni of Douglas or that have brothers and sisters that go there,” President of the UNF Interfraternity Council Mark Favia said. “I just think this is something that really hits close to home because those people are 4 to 5 years younger than us.  They’ll be in the same classrooms with us next year. They’re the same ages as our younger brothers and sisters.”

At first, the event was being organized by the president of Delta Upsilon Jared Rubin, who was also an alumnus of Stoneman Douglas. Rubin’s fraternity wanted to organize the event to raise money for the victims, so they planned a 3 on 3 basketball tournament at the Field House.

The event expanded as more organizations wanted to get involved, and eventually the Interfraternity Council adopted the event. The council reached out to several businesses in the Jacksonville area, and were able to make the 3 on 3 tournament even more.

16 different businesses were able to donate for the raffle, and the event included food, games and a silent auction. A blood drive truck was also available to those who wanted to donate blood.

“I’m just really happy that everyone was able to come together, and we were able to get this thing to happen,” Favia said.

According to Favia, the goal of the event was to raise $2,000. All proceeds were donated to the official Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund.

Spinnaker attempted to contact the event organizer to verify how much money was raised, but were unable to contact him by the time of publication.
