It’s the dog days of summer and, on some nights, students struggle to find something to do with themselves. If this sounds like you, now is the time to stop watching reruns of Grey’s Anatomy and head to a Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp game.

Located next to the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium only 13 miles from campus, the Shrimp games have events and discount deals which could attract students.

On Monday nights at the ballpark, it’s half off Yuengling 16-ounce cans for students ages 21 and up. The days with the biggest crowds of college students are Thirsty Thursdays, which feature $1 12-ounce and $2 24-ounce Budweiser products available for students of age.

Since the team is called the Jumbo Shrimp, the food at the games is shrimp-themed. To name a few, the concession stands serve fried jumbo shrimp, popcorn shrimp, and shrimp and grits. The team store also has gear that combines jumbo shrimp and puns, such as shirts that say “Shrimp N’ Grit,” “Shrimpin’ Ain’t easy” and “Crustacean Nation.”

During the games, the atmosphere is second to none. The promotions team puts on fun games between the innings, like a tricycle race, and they also toss out free t-shirts.

Although the Shrimp are in last place in their division, fans come to the games for the fun atmosphere and to support the home team. Students can kick back with their friends, enjoy a baseball game and make some memories during these long dog days of summer.
