History / Awards
You could say Spinnaker Media started in 1974 with the birth of the campus’ first newspaper, the Halyard. In its 2 1/2 years of existence, it received a national award from the Associated Collegiate Press. But a funding and oversight battle with the student government closed the paper. With interim support from university Pres. Thomas Carpenter and a demand from the student body for a free press, the newspaper restarted as the Spinnaker in 1977.
Spinnaker Digital began in 1995 as part of the newspaper and became its own department in 2011. The website was an ACP Pacemaker finalist in both 2009 and 2013.
The Halyard won ACP’s First Class award in 1975-76. The Spinnaker was an ACP Pacemaker Finalist in 2009-10, 2011-12, and 2012-2013. It won in 2009-10.
The campus radio station, Osprey Radio, began in 1993. It changed its name to Spinnaker Radio in 2013. The station was one of five finalists for CMJ’s best student-run, Internet-only college radio station in North America in 2011 and 2012. In the spring of 2015, Spinnaker Radio began broadcasting locally via 95.5 FM.
Osprey TV also began in the 1993-94 school year, and changed its name to Spinnaker Television in 2013.
The Spinnaker Media Business Office also became its own department in 2011.
