Travel requests cut and approved as funds run out

student governmentThe Budget and Allocations Committee (BAC) has $1,632 in their travel request fund as of their March 3rd meeting.

Senate Chairman Collin Waycoff said they have $19,000 in travel requests that have yet to be heard. He said the majority of those will never be heard.

Zachary Lebovic spoke on behalf of the North Florida Wrestling team to make a request for $2,401. The team is trying to go to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Championships in Allen, Texas.

Lebovic said 90 percent of the club’s expenses are for travel, and from his experience, this is the bare minimum they need to make it.

The BAC cut their lodging approval amount to $1,478 and approved a travel request of $1,908 unanimously.

Brandon Thigpen spoke on behalf of the Bass Fishing Club to make a travel request of $353 so that two of the club’s members can compete at a fishing tournament in Guntersville, Ala.

Thigpen said that sending the students to the tournament could bring UNF recognition via ESPN broadcasting of the tournament and potentially a FLW scholarship fund if the team performs well.

The BAC cut their lodging approval amount to $67 and approved a travel request of $286 unanimously.

After the meeting ended, Senator Moore told Thigpen he was glad they could help and sorry that they couldn’t do more.

Michael Martindill, a graphic design freshman and member of the Bass Fishing Club, said this will not keep them from going.

“Even if we have to pay out of pocket, which we have had to do before, we’ll find a way to go.”

Bass Fishing Club member Asa Heckman, a biology junior, said he thinks the committee should look if clubs fund-raise and how difficult it has been for them, before approving their requests.
