Purple lights illuminated the trees in the Student Union Plaza as people waited for the arrival of the Ed Waters marching band. Peers standing against violence followed closely behind with lit candles in their hands to bring light into the night.

The 10th annual Take Back the Night is a night at UNF dedicated to those who stand up against violence, survivors of violence and those who lost their lives because of it.

Those who stood in the crowd were moved by personal stories and words of encouragement regarding how to help out family and friends experiencing physical, emotional or sexual violence.

“Let’s talk about awareness, let’s talk about recognition, let’s also talk about prevention. If you see something happening, let people know. If it happens to you make sure you reach out,” President Szymanksi said.
