Open gates - Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams look to start their regular seasons off right.

The UNF women’s basketball team erased a 15-point deficit and led by one with 2:30 left in its Atlantic Sun Tournament first-round matchup against Jacksonville University. However, late turnovers and clutch JU free throws ended the Ospreys season and proved to be too much for the Ospreys to overcome as they fell, 52-56.

The UNF women’s basketball team clinched its Atlantic Sun Tournament berth and moved to second place in the conference with its 55-49 win over its cross-town rival, the JU Dolphins, Feb. 8 inside the Jacksonville Veteran Memorial Arena.

It took two overtimes but the UNF women’s basketball team outlasted the Campbell Camels, 65-63, inside the UNF Arena, Jan. 29, in the second meeting between the two teams this season.

The UNF women’s basketball team won four of its last five games. Now it is set to host its cross-town rival, the Jacksonville University Dolphins, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. inside the UNF Arena in the “River City Rumble.”

The first win of the season for the UNF women’s basketball team came Nov. 30 against Wofford College at the UNF Arena. Teamwork, communication and hard work were the main components contributing to the Ospreys’ 71-60 win, said UNF women’s basketball head coach Mary Tappmeyer. In the first half, the Ospreys trailed 23-26. But after entering the second half and accumulating 20 turnovers, they caught up and took a 48-34 lead. “We challenged the girls at halftime to come out and play to win and to not play scared,” Tappmeyer said. “I thought they really stepped up to that challenge. Our rebounding got a little bit better in the second half. We still have to work on our defensive rotations though.”
