This story was updated at 3:43 p.m. on Jan. 23 with a correction clarifying that university employees are required to use a virtual private network when accessing Banner’s administrative applications, not students.
The University of North Florida announced Friday morning that university employees will be required to use a virtual private network to access the Banner system from off campus, calling the change a temporary security measure during an ongoing system upgrade.
According to the university, on-campus access to Banner will not be affected. The requirement is in place while UNF Information Technology Services upgrades Banner to its latest instance.
Banner is the university’s primary administrative system that stores and processes student records. ITS Change Manager George Boston, said Banner’s administrative applications, like student forms and schedules, require the VPN.
Employees are encouraged to set up the VPN as soon as possible to avoid interruptions. ITS has provided setup instructions and is offering assistance through its Help Desk. Employees who experience continued access issues after connecting to the VPN are advised to try using a private or incognito browser window.
