The queen of somber and melancholy has just released a new album. Yes, Mitski dropped her album “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me” on Feb. 27th. The album includes eleven different songs, equaling a thirty-four-minute listen.
“Nothing’s About to Happen to Me” reminds me a lot of another one of Mitski’s albums, “Be the Cowboy,” which was released back in 2018.
The overall progression of both is similar. They both have a softer sound, but include a couple of experimental songs that keep audiences on their toes.
“Nothing’s About to Happen to Me” is a great album that does not stray far from what Mitski is known for: graceful vocals accompanied by an alternative and unique sound. Some of my favorites include “In a Lake,” “Where’s My Phone?,” “Cats,” and “I’ll Change For You.”
“In a Lake” has a really peaceful and soothing beginning. Mitski has a unique and previously mentioned soft cadence. Her voice is filled with a heaviness that has resonated with me as well as many other fans.
Towards the end of the song, the instrumental and Mitski’s voice swell in such a smooth way. “In a Lake” is a really great start for the album.
“Where’s My Phone?” is one of the more creative songs on the album. It’s loud in comparison to “In a Lake” with the prominent drums and the distorted guitar that comes through.
Mitski sings in this specifically formatted way that is quite catchy. It’s upbeat with a slightly dark undertone, which Mitski has always done very well. “Where’s My Phone?” is a captivating song, and I enjoyed it a lot.
“Cats” eases back into the smoother and quieter tone that “In a Lake” has. It includes these light drums towards the end that make the song sound interesting. However, what drew me into this song was the lyrics and theme.
“Cats” is centered around waiting for someone to want to stay while also finding companionship in cats. As previously mentioned, Mitski holds so much emotion in her voice, and I’m always so drawn to it.
“I’ll Change for You” has something similar to a jazzy element that reminds me of cafe music. While the track is stylistically different from the rest, Mitski’s voice is still the main focus. Her voice is melodic as she shifts between notes with ease.
Towards the end of the song, she starts to belt, which makes the emotional lyrics hit me. Mitski sings about begging another to love her, willing to change to make them stay.
“I’ll Change for You” was one of the tracks that truly resonated with me, and it was done so elegantly.
Overall, “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me” is something I truly enjoyed. The song orchestration was done well, Mitski has very melodic and powerful vocals, and the lyrics have an expert way of capturing a feeling.
