At the University of North Florida, Giving Day is an opportunity to support the programs that shape campus life. Among them, student journalism stands as one of the most essential.
Student journalism matters because it creates a record of what happens here. It documents the decisions, debates and everyday experiences that define our university. Without it, much of campus life would go unreported, unexamined and eventually forgotten.
Publications like Spinnaker play an important role in keeping institutions accountable. Student reporters attend meetings, question administrators and bring transparency to issues that directly affect our peers. From coverage of tuition and policy changes to student safety and mental health, our work ensures that information is accessible and visible to those who need it.
Just as importantly, student journalism prepares future journalists. It teaches students how to report accurately, think critically and engage responsibly with the world around them. In a new and evolving media landscape where credibility is constantly being questioned, that training is more important than ever.
Working at Spinnaker has shaped the way I see both journalism and the world around me. It has taught me how to ask better questions and how to listen carefully. I’ve learned how to navigate difficult conversations, approach sources with professionalism and empathy, and tell stories that are both accurate and meaningful. These are the skills, and values, I will take with me long after I leave the newsroom.
Giving Day is a chance to recognize that value. Supporting student journalism is not just funding a publication — it’s also an opportunity to invest in transparency, accountability and the future of UNF being an informed community.
This Giving Day, consider making a donation to support student journalism and ensure that student voices continue to be heard.
