The University of North Florida Ospreys lost 0-8 against the Florida State University Seminoles on Tuesday night at JoAnne Graf Field.
The loss comes after the Ospreys were defeated by the Jacksonville University Dolphins and marks UNF softball’s 20th loss to FSU since 2007.
The Ospreys had a rough start in the first inning, with Mercer transfer Hallie Langford getting grounded out. The Ospreys looked better as Sophomore outfielder Grace Shaw walked to first base and then advanced to second as Florida Atlantic transfer Bella Cimino singled to second base.
However, the Seminoles strengthened their defense in response, making a double play by grounding out Arizona State transfer Ayden Allen and getting Cimino out at second base.
At the bottom of the first inning, the Seminoles had a powerful opening, with Junior infielder Isa Torres hitting a homer to deep right field. Gaining a small lead, the Seminoles were up 0-1.
In the second inning, Georgia transfer Hannah Davila made a strong play, doubling down the right field line. It wasn’t enough, however, as the next three Osprey were fouled out, grounded out and struck out, respectively.
The Seminoles continued to expand their lead as one runner scored from first base while Torres advanced to third off of a throwing error by Purdue transfer Kadyn Camper.
The Seminoles didn’t stop there, as one batter sacrificed herself so another runner could score. Then, the Seminoles hit another home run to deep left field, scoring two more runs.
The Ospreys didn’t have better luck in the third inning. Sophomore outfielder Kennedy McQuillan was struck out, and while Langford was able to walk to first, she was soon gotten out while Shaw was grounded out.
The Seminoles went on to gain more points, slowly advancing from base to base until Torres doubled to deep right field, allowing the Seminoles to score two runs. Torres then made a run for it as the next batter singled to left field, managing to score from second base.
The third inning ended with the Ospreys down 0-8.
The Game continued with no more runs from either team. The Ospreys tried to make a comeback, but faced two strikeouts and a pop-up in the fifth inning, marking the end of the match.
The Ospreys will be back on the road to Fort Myers, Fla. for their series against the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles, starting with a doubleheader. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
