UNF-JZBG lecture series featuring Dr. Terri Ellis
UNF and Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens Lecture Series will feature a talk titled “Bacteria through the selection window: How environmental conditions influence antibiotic resistance evolution,” according to the university’s events calendar.
In the event description, students can join Dr. Terri Ellis, an associate professor of biology, as she discusses antibiotic resistance in bacteria.Â
According to Ellis’s faculty bio, the research conducted in her lab focuses on the outer surface of pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria, utilizing a range of proteomics, biochemical, cell biology, genetic, and immunology-based techniques.
Ellis’ lab studies how bacteria in this selection window behave and adapt under these conditions to become resistant. According to the UNF events calendar, this talk will highlight research from the Ellis lab that identifies environmental conditions that widen the selection window.Â
The lecture series is a hybrid event with virtual attendance available via Zoom, and registration is required.Â
The event organizer, Lindsay Mahovetz-Myers, is listed in the calendar post. According to the Jacksonville Zoo website, Mahovetz-Myers’ research lies in animal behavior and cognition, including problem-solving, learning, and social aspects of cognition in primates.
According to the calendar post, the lecture series is on April 6, at 12 p.m., located at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, 370 Zoo Parkway, Jacksonville, FL 32218.

UNF Opera Theatre Production of the Magic Flute Presented by VyStar Credit Union
UNF’s School of Music will present an opera theater production of The Magic Flute. This opera will blend enchanting music, fantasy, and storytelling. This makes it an excellent introduction for opera lovers and newcomers alike.Â
The Magic Flute is celebrated for its memorable melodies, whimsical characters, and themes of love, wisdom, and triumph, according to the UNF events calendar.Â
The calendar states the production will be held in the UNF Lazzara Performance Hall; the performance is a fully staged mainstage production and showcases UNF student performers’ artistry, highlighting expressive vocals, dramatic storytelling, and the timeless brilliance of Mozart’s score.
The Kennedy Center website says Mozart’s final opera, The Magic Flute, debuted in Vienna in 1791. The libretto most likely had several sources and drew from folk tales and ancient lore. It also draws on popular contemporary operatic, political, and philosophical themes.Â
John Daugherty will organize the production, according to the calendar description. Daugherty is an assistant professor and director of the opera program, according to the UNF School of Music Faculty webpage.
Registration for this event requires tickets, but they are free, according to the calendar description. The UNF Opera Theatre’s Magic Flute production will be performed on April 10 at 7:30 p.m.
