Spinnaker

Dear Editor,
While I understand it was published in the Discourse section of the Spinnaker, the article “Election not truly a landslide” must be questioned.

As a Libertarian who believes in many Republican ideals such as free market economy and limited government, it shames me to see the College Republican president’s article. He claims President-elect Barack Obama is the first Democrat to win “with a convincing majority” since LBJ. But in 1996, Clinton defeated Bob Dole by a margin of 8.5 percent, versus the 7 percent by which Obama defeated Sen. John McCain.

Foster also makes the claim, “In 2004, the economy and the war were going well.” Perhaps he still believes Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” speech, but I will take the word of David Kay, former head of the U.S. weapons inspection teams in Iraq, instead. He informed a Senate committee no weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq, and prewar intelligence was “almost all wrong” about Saddam Hussein’s arsenal in January 2004.

Like Foster, I do not agree with Obama’s platform, but to claim he never even said it is just a lie. Foster states, “When Democrats are honest about who they are, they will lose every time.” But in this year’s election, 315 Democrats were elected to either the House, Senate, vice presidency or presidency. Foster is apparently claiming all 315 of these individuals were not honest about who they were, citing the defeat of one, Al Franken, who apparently was.
