UNF’s mandatory freshman housing requirement is going to be a thing of the past come Fall 2017, according to Mauricio Gonzalez, vice president of Student and International affairs.
Gonzalez made the announcement to a room full of staff members during a Student Affairs annual breakfast gathering, confirming rumors that the requirement was coming to an end.
For the last several years, all UNF first time in college (FTIC) students and freshmen have been required to both live on campus and purchase a meal plan during their first year at the university.
The rule was put into place as a way of helping the university maintain retention rates and ensuring that students have the full freshman experience, according to the President’s Office.
It is unclear at this time if the meal plan requirement is going to be eliminated as well.

I graduated before it was in effect. I thought it was ridiculous. I rarely ate lunch on campus though the meal options are much better now when I go for events than when I was a student. I guess the trial was not successful .
