A former Jacksonville University football player was injured and a Jacksonville man is dead following the shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub where 50 people were killed.

According to the City of Orlando, Jacksonville’s 29-year-old Darryl (DJ) Roman Burt II died. Burt was a financial aid officer for Jacksonville’s Keiser University as well as an active member of Jacksonville Jaycees, a young professionals group.

Burt was remembered by the Jacksonville Jaycees in a Facebook post posted Monday morning that read, “We Stand with Orlando as we mourn the loss of our own Darryl Roman Burt II. We are all deeply saddened by this tragic event and the loss of our Jaycee Brother.”

The Jacksonville Jaycees group is holding  meeting tonight at 7 p.m. where they are inviting members of the community to join them to discuss the planning of a fundraiser to help Burt’s family. The meeting will be held at Blackfinn Ameripub at the St. John’s town center. For more information visit the club’s event page.

The Times Union reported that former Jacksonville University football player Rodney Sumter Jr., was a bartender at Pulse nightclub. He was shot three times and was in surgery Monday.

Sumter was a former wide receiver for the Dolphins from 2008 to 2010. He previously played football in Neptune Beach while attending Fletcher High School.

There is an active GoFundMe page for those who wish to help Sumter’s family.
