The Jaguars lost their home opener to the Kansas City Chiefs,40-26, on Sunday. The Jaguars lost their quarterback, Nick Foles, to a broken clavicle in the middle of the first quarter.

Foles took a massive hit from a Chiefs defensive lineman while throwing the Jaguars’ first touchdown pass of the season: a 35-yard dime to DJ Chark. Fans were ecstatic until they saw the team’s biggest offseason acquisition walking to the locker room to be evaluated. It was revealed after the game that Foles suffered a broken clavicle and has no current timeline to return.

Gardner Minshew played the rest of the game to fill the hole left by the injury. The rookie sixth round pick out of Washington State greatly passed expectations. He finished the game completing 22 of 25 for 275 yards and two touchdowns along with an interception. He also almost broke the team record for most consecutive completions in a game, which David Garrard currently holds at 15.

The Chiefs’ offense led by Patrick Mahomes looked unstoppable. He threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns against a defense that ranked in the top-five in yards allowed last season. Sammy Watkins caught nine of Mahomes’ passes for 198 yards and all three of his touchdowns.

The Jaguars defense surprised everyone on Sunday. Coming into the season they were touted as a juggernaut that teams should fear. The Chiefs’ high-flying offense tore them apart all day. Tempers flared in the second quarter when an altercation took place between Myles Jack and a few Chiefs’ offensive players. The Jaguars’ star linebacker was ejected from the game but will face no further discipline from the team or the league.

The Jaguars will attempt to put this ugly start behind them and find a win against the Texans in Week Two. The game will be played in Houston, Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
