Google Maps puts out a new feature to make driving a little easier

Erik Feliciano, General Assignment Reporter

Google has rolled out a new feature to Google Maps that’s going to make driving a lot less of a hassle.

Sandra Tseng, Google Maps production manager made a statement on the new feature:

“Today, we’re adding more tools that reflect real-time contributions from the community so you can stay even more informed when you’re behind the wheel.”

The update in question would allow users to report crashes, speed traps, slow traffic (including construction), lane closures, disabled vehicles and objects on the road.

Previously, law enforcement weren’t too happy when the update made it onto Iphones earlier this year. The NYPD has stated previously that “Revealing the location of checkpoints puts those drivers, their passengers and the general public at risk,” in a letter according to the Washington post

It seems now, however, that has changed.

“The department has engaged in productive discussions with Google to make information available to drivers that will make roads safer and encourage responsible driving, while not impeding the enforcement of New York State Vehicle and Traffic laws.” said Sgt. Mary Frances O’Donnell, an NYPD spokesman.

To report you must simply press the “+” button and “Add a report.”
