The University of North Florida removed sociology from its core general education curriculum almost seven weeks before the Florida Board of Governors made the same decision for the entire state university system, according to the Office of the Provost.
Following discussions with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Sociology Department Chair, UNF notified the BOG that it wanted to remove SYG 2000, Introduction to Sociology, from the 2026-27 general education curriculum, according to a UNF spokesperson.
Preemptive Action
During the two-day BOG meeting in March, Chancellor Ray Rodrigues prompted a surprise vote on removing the sociology course from general education requirements in the entire university system.
Rodrigues explained that his concerns center on the “indoctrination” in the sociology course.
“Sociology as a discipline is now social and political advocacy dressed in the regalia of the academy,” Rodrigues said.
Following the approval of this mandate, this guideline will be applicable for the 2026-27 academic year.
In communication with Spinnaker, Associate Professor of Sociology Richard Phillips initially stated that UNF had removed this course from the curriculum independently before the BOG meeting.
“Our provost and dean removed sociology from the general education curriculum just weeks before it was removed for the entire state university system,” said Phillips. “To my understanding, they did this for pragmatic reasons to protect certain conditional funding.”
Phillips said UNF and, specifically, its College of Arts and Sciences has “always had the best interests of the sociology program in mind”.
“While I acknowledge that the BOG has legitimate concerns, to my knowledge, the things they’re worried about were not happening with UNF sociology,” said Phillips.
Spinnaker independently confirmed Phillips’ claim that UNF removed the sociology course prior to the BOG mandate with the Office of the Provost, but the Office of the Provost did not comment on what prompted this decision.
“On February 6, 2026, after several consultations with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Chair of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, the Provost’s Office notified the BOG Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs that the University of North Florida would like to remove SYG 2000, Introduction to Sociology, from its 2026-2027 approved General Education list. This decision was made in recognition of General Education course requirements for compliance with Florida statute. UNF was one of four SUS institutions which removed SYG 2000 prior to the BOG meeting on March 25-26, 2026,” the statement read.
Student response to indoctrination concerns
In response to this mandate, UNF students said the decision does not reflect the student body’s sentiment.
Nick Rachow, a junior, said that the course is necessary for learning how to navigate disagreements.
“These are classes we need, especially now, especially after what happened to Charlie Kirk,” said Rachow. “No one knows how to speak to each other, and how else are we going to learn?”
According to the College of Arts and Sciences, the sociology curriculum at UNF covers “sociological theory, methods of social science research, and a variety of topics such as: social inequality, social identities, family dynamics, politics, education, and international relations”.
Freshman Sofia Gordon said that the BOG’s removal of the social course hinders others from thinking critically.
“They’re worried about indoctrination when they’re the ones doing it,” said Gordon.
