The University of North Florida will host a variety of events during the third week of April, including a lecture on creative writing, an author talk, and a flute ensemble.
Roy Christopher and Sandra Simonds will give author talks at events being organized by the Thomas G. Carpenter Library and the Department of English. The School of Music’s Flute Ensemble will present “Forests, Fairies, and Friends.”
UNF Flute Ensemble presents “Forests, Fairies, and Friends”
A whimsical and imaginative concert titled “Forests, Fairies, and Friends” will feature a unique program inspired by nature, folklore, and magical storytelling.
This concert is hosted by the School of Music, according to the UNF events calendar. The ensemble will perform a variety of works, showcasing the different sounds and styles of the flute family.
The performance will include a mix of classical music and whimsical pieces that paint images of forests, magical beings, and the connections of musical friendship.
Gia Sastre is the concert organizer. Sastre is a part-time faculty member, classical flutist, and freelance soloist, according to the UNF faculty bio website.
“Flute Ensemble: Forests, Fairies, and Friends” will take place on April 13 in the Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Center, Room 1200.
Library Author Talk: Roy Christopher
An author talk with Roy Christopher is going to be hosted by the Thomas G. Carpenter Library.
Christopher, an author and instructor at UNF’s School of Communication, will present some of his works, and participants can also join in a question-and-answer session, according to the events calendar.
Roy Christopher’s personal website states that he earned his Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Texas at Austin and currently teaches at the School of Communication at UNF.
Christopher has written about music, media, and culture in books, blogs, national magazines, and academic journals. He is the author of “The Medium Picture,” “Post-Self: Journeys Beyond the Human Body,” and “Dead Precedents: How Hip-Hop Defines the Future.”
The Library Author Talk is organized by Maria Atilano, student engagement librarian at UNF’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library, according to her UNF faculty bio.
“Library Author Talk with Roy Christopher” will take place on April 14 at 5 p.m. in the Carpenter Library, Special Collections Reading Room.
Word by Word Presents: Sandra Simonds on How a Book Takes Shape
The Word by Word Creative Writing Series will bring acclaimed novelist and poet Sandra Simonds to UNF for a public talk and reading.
The Department of English will host Word by Word, featuring Simonds on April 14, according to the UNF events calendar.
Simonds will discuss how visual and language patterns, forms, and shapes create the structure of a book. She will also talk about moving from writing individual poems to recognizing the emerging structure of a manuscript, according to the calendar description.
After the Word by Word talk, Simonds will read from her latest book, “Burning Oracle,” participate in a Q&A and sign books.
Simonds has written 10 books and has received multiple awards as a writer and professor, according to the calendar description.
Word by Word is organized by assistant professor, poet, and creative writing coordinator Jessica Stark.
This event is free and open to the public and will take place at Roy Lassiter Hall, second floor, English Commons. Tickets are available online.
