Student dies two days after first solo flight

Darien Reinhold Matay, a 19-year-old UNF psychology major, died on July 16.

According to his obituary, Matay had many hobbies, including scuba diving and skiing. Matay was also an amateur pilot, and completed his first solo flight two days before his death.

Friends and family held a celebration of Matay’s life at Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home on July 21 in Orlando.

Thomas VanSchoor, dean of students at UNF, did not have additional information but wrote in an email that Matay’s mother called UNF to inform administration of her son’s death.

The obituary did not include the circumstances surrounding Matay’s death.
