Spinnaker Radio hosted the first live broadcast of a UNF sport in history on Sunday, Nov. 20. Students were able to hear minute-by-minute coverage of the women’s basketball game on 95.5 FM WSKR, when the Ospreys went into double overtime to win against Florida Atlantic University.

Leading up to this first broadcast, the Play by Play team — producers Shannon Burris, radio station manager, and Joslyn Simmons, sports editor, and hosts Will Weber, managing editor, and Al Huffman, sports reporter — met for two weeks of practices.

The crew held one-hour practices three times a week, Simmons said, during which the hosts were able to familiarize themselves with the team, practice hosting and draw up stat grids with the names of and facts about the women’s basketball team.

Weber said he’s excited about Play by Play, not only for the experience of covering live sports, but to bring the added attention to the women’s basketball team.

“This is paving the way for us to call more games in the future, and provide a new platform for sports,” Weber said.

Burris said she feels like it went really well, and that this has potential to be a big asset to the university.

“I’m really proud of the Play by Play team and excited for the future,” Burris said.

Spinnaker is looking forward to covering more women’s basketball, and hopes to expand coverage to men’s basketball games in the near future.

The next game that will be live-broadcast is the Jan. 23 game against Kennesaw State at 7 p.m.
