The University of North Florida Ethics Team will compete in the twenty-first intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Nationals on Sunday, Feb. 26. The club is described by its members as a debate team for philosophy students.

The team went 3-1 at regionals, but this record was strong enough for the team to prove they are prepared to compete on the national level.

“I think it’s a really nice opportunity to engage in smaller groups of students who are willing and able to engage in ethical issues,” said Jonathan Matheson, the ethics team’s coach and a philosophy professor.

Matheson said it’s fun to see students bond and grow together as friends and colleagues through these competitions and the topics they bring up.

“Some questions are difficult and they require the humility to see the other point of view,” said ethics team member Cameron Garrett.

According to Garrett, students can earn college credit for participating in the club. Professor Matheson explained that involvement in the team is listed as an independent study philosophy course and will net students a solid three credit hours on their transcript.

“You can see the sense of achievement and hard work pay off, and everyone else recognizes the good work that they are doing,” said Matheson.
