The week we’ve all been waiting for is coming up: Spring Break. A time where we get to supposedly take a break from the lectures, tests and assignments — unless your professors decide to make your life miserable. Most students take this week to catch up on sleep, relax and hit the beach, but why not try something new — like sleeping in one of Jacksonville’s numerous parks.
Spinnaker spoke with UNF student Sean Lahav, an environmental project leader, on Jacksonville’s top three parks to go camping.
- Dutton Island Preserve (Dutton Island Road W Atlantic Beach, FL)
If you are looking to get in the water while camping, this is the place to go. It’s right on the intercostal, and perfect for paddle boarding, kayaking or canoeing. If you want to rent out some paddle boards, kayaks or canoes, Lahav recommends Black Creek Outfitters. There is also a designated fishing area and a entire section of the park for hikers.
Be aware there is no electricity or water at this camping site though. Before camping at this location, you need to call the City of Atlantic Beach Recreation Department at (904) 247-5828.
- Little Talbot Island State Park (12157 Heckscher Dr Jacksonville, FL)
Want to go exploring? You can go to Little Talbot Island to camp. From there, you can explore Big Talbot Island and Amelia Island. You can explore the wildlife while hiking or you can choose to go to the beach and enjoy the sun. Campers can also kayak, canoe or fish at this state park.
Each campsite has electricity and fresh water available. They also have a laundry facility and two bathhouses. You can make your camping reservation online or by calling (800) 326-3521.
- Hanna Park (500 Wonderwood Dr Jacksonville, FL)
“For camping, I think Hanna Park for me is #1.” Lahav said. “It’s just a really unique environment. You have the trees and the lake in the middle, but you also have one of the nicest beaches in Jacksonville.”
The campground does have electricity and water connections. They also have a laundry facility and bathhouses available for campers. If you want to reserve a spot to camp at this location, you can book online or by calling (904) 249-4700.
So, gather up your family and friends and plan your camping trip for next week. Just don’t forget to bring some sunscreen, insect repellant and a guitar to sing that annoying, but catchy “Campfire Song.”
