Celebrate National Poetry Month with Student Workshops

In honor of National Poetry Month, the Writing Center is hosting various workshops where you can channel your creativity. These workshops will all be occurring in Bldg. 4, the Skinner-Jones Hall North, in room 2501. Be sure to check out these workshops if you’re looking to become the next William Blake.

Wednesday, April 4

Write Your Poem

2:00 – 3:00 pm

Learn how to begin a solid poem. This collaborative workshop teaches you what makes a poem captivating.

 

Friday, April 6 and Friday, April 13

Feedback on Your Poetry

2:00 – 3:00 pm

Along with a critique of your work, join a visiting poet for a conversation on poetry careers. Feel free to bring original works, new and old.

 

Monday, April 9

Student Showcase

12:00 – 1:00 pm

Bring original work or your favorite poem to share at this informal poetry reading. Feel free to attend as an audience member as well to get your fix of spoken-word poetry.

 

Wednesday, April 11

Critique Your Poem

2:00 – 3:00 pm

In this second critique session, learn different techniques to make your poem stand out. This session will include exercises to take an idea to a full-fledged draft.

 

April 18

Perform Your Poem

2:00 – 3:00 pm

Bring your poem to life in this informal poetry reading. Works in progress are welcome as well. You don’t have to attend the first sessions of this workshop to join in this performance.

These workshops are free to students, faculty, and staff. They will also offer feedback and guidance from the English Graduate Organization (EGO) and UNF faculty poets. Whether you’re just starting out or already have a couple of published works under your belt, these workshops offer a collaborative and creative setting for lovers of poetry to experiment with words.
