2020 democratic presidential candidate: Jay Inslee

Alex Toth

Age: 68

Experience: Governor of Washington (2013-present), U.S. Representative from WA-01 (1999-2012), U.S. Representative from WA-04 (1993-1995)

Fun Fact: In 2009, Inslee participated in a basketball game against President Obama at the White House.

Jay Inslee has one big issue in this election: climate change. The Washington Governor vowed to be the “first climate president in history” as he launched his campaign outside of a solar-energy factory in Seattle. As such, Inslee supports the Green New Deal, but also thinks Democrats should go even further to combat climate change.

As Governor, Inslee created a $120 million fund for clean energy, set further caps on emissions, and launched the U.S. Climate Alliance, a group of governors that are implementing the terms of the Paris Climate Agreement within their own states. Inslee has also taken progressive stances on non-climate change issues. He lowered college tuition in the state of Washington while governor. He also launched a program that would grant pardons for past misdemeanor marijuana offenses, now that the drug is legal in his state.
