FullSizeRender (1)UNF student George Louissaint, Jr. went missing early on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 12. According to police, friends and family, he just vanished. Disappeared.

Friends who last saw him say Louissaint was upset before he went missing. His family says disappearing like this is out of character for him. Police are considering all possible explanations as the investigation continues.

While the details of the case are still emerging, Spinnaker put together a timeline of everything we know so far. We will continue to update this timeline as more information becomes available, until Louissaint is found.

Sunday, Feb. 12

At 1:30 a.m., UNFPD shut down a party at the Flats apartment complex. Louissaint was at the party according to Jaden Durity, another student in attendance. Durity said UNFPD claimed to smell marijuana, but found none at the party.

Markale Ford, Louissaint’s roommate, told Spinnaker he too was at the party but left briefly after police came. When he returned to the Flats, he said Louissaint seemed sad. Durity said during the time Ford was gone, Louissaint had an argument with someone that upset him.

At 2:32 a.m. Jennifer Louissaint, George’s sister, spoke to him on the phone after receiving a call from Louissaint’s girlfriend telling her to check on him. He told his sister repeatedly that he loves her.

Between that phone call and when officers were dispatched to the Flats for a second time, Ford and Louissant spoke again, outside near a dumpster where several students were congregated. Ford said he “stepped away for a second, then he was gone.” According to the police report, Ford told police he and several others searched the area for Louissaint, but couldn’t find him.

Officers were dispatched to the Flats at 3:02 a.m. in reference to a possible suicidal/missing person. UNFPD made contact with Ford. Officers searched the area of Kernan Boulevard near the Flats and The District apartment complex, where Louissaint lives, but didn’t find anything.

After that, UNFPD called the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for back-up. They conducted a search of Louissaint’s apartment, and brought a K-9 unit to the area Louissaint was last seen. The dogs couldn’t find a scent trail.

At 11:53 a.m., a Campus Alert was sent out to all students announcing that Louissaint was missing and asking that students go to police with any information.

Louissaint’s family arrived in Jacksonville Sunday afternoon.

Monday, Feb. 13

UNFPD and JSO’s search continued on Monday with helicopters, more K-9 units and dive teams searching the area Louissaint was last seen.

At this time, police were hoping Louissaint may have been traveling to visit his girlfriend, who lives in Alabama. Louissaint’s girlfriend arrived in Jacksonville on this day, and his family handed out missing person flyers around campus and the areas he was last seen.

UNF Police Chief Frank Mackesy personally searched a dumpster at the Flats for Louissaint.

Up to 150 people searched the woods surrounding the Flats for signs of Louissaint. They searched approximately 13 square miles Tuesday, and dive teams had searched close to 20 bodies of water.

At the end of the day, Mackesy announced they were no closer to finding Louissaint than they were in the beginning of the day, and asked that any resident’s in the area with surveillance footage to contact police.

UNF President John Delaney released a statement at 3:38 p.m. commending UNFPD officers for their work, and asking that students continue to keep Louissaint in their prayers.

Officers began their search again Wednesday morning, the fourth day since Louissaint went missing. Police handed out more than 2,000 flyers to nearby residents asking for surveillance video and tips.

By noon on Wednesday, officers had searched more than 14 square miles of wooded area, and 27 bodies of water.

Mackesy said although police presence in the area would wind down Thursday because officers do not have much to go on, the investigation into Louissaint’s disappearance is far from over. He asked again that anyone with any information come forward.

On Louissaint’s 21st birthday, only JSO dive teams continued to search, to no avail.

Saturday, Feb. 18

Louissaint’s body was found on Feb. 18 in the pond outside the District on Kernan apartment complex. A passerby saw something floating in the water early that morning and alerted authorities, who later confirmed it was Louissaint. At this time police did not know the cause of death.

March

In March, Spinnaker spoke to Louissaint’s friends and peers to get a better picture of his life. He was a student at UNF, an athlete, a member of the Black Student Union, vice president of the Caribbean Student Association and an employee at Tinseltown. To the people who knew him, he was so much more — a comedian, a friend, a brother. Learn more about him here:
