The University of North Florida offers services and support for students, such as tutoring, coaching and study lounges.
There are several free services offered to students, to help further their knowledge in different subject areas like Student Academic Success Services, the Writing Center and the SMART Center
Student Academic Success Services (SASS)
The Student Academic Success Services offers live tutoring, coaching, peer-assisted student success and supplemental instruction. These services offer students different ways to improve their academics and time management.
Live tutoring is offered for a variety of different subject areas, including biology, physics, and engineering. It is typically on a walk-in basis, according to the SASS website.
Peer Assisted Student Success is currently required for classes such as physics and programming. PASS consists of review sessions for course content that prepares students for future assignments and quizzes.
Supplemental Instruction is not required for students, and professors won’t know if a student is using SI. SI is intended to assist students with courses that are typically more difficult, such as biology, chemistry, engineering, physics and accounting and finance, according to the SASS website.
Another support option that is offered at SASS is coaching. Coaching appointments are free and are typically 45 minutes long. Coaching, while it doesn’t focus on certain subject areas, can be used as a tool for students to improve studying, time management, organization and more.
Dylan Charles, the director of SASS, has been working at UNF for 12 years and has been the director of SASS for five years.
Charles said there are both academic and social benefits to using the variety of services SASS offers. “It is a way to engage on campus,” he said.
Any student can use the support at SASS, “It’s not meant for a particular type of student,” Charles said.

The UNF Writing Center is located at the top of these stairs.
Writing Center
The Writing Center at UNF offers free support such as tutoring and group consultations.
The Writing Center offers support for students majoring in any subject area, whether students need help writing a paper, citations, formatting or brainstorming.
Morgan Connor has been the Writing Center Instructional Support Coordinator since 2023 and has seen an increase in the number of students who use the writing center.
The Writing Center served over 2,600 students last year, according to Connor.
The writing center has consultants who can help other students with writing struggles. The consultants must have strong communication skills, interdisciplinary writing skills and be willing to learn and improve their writing, according to Connor.
The consultants each have different writing styles and genre preferences; there is a consultant for anyone who needs assistance. “They need to show a certain level of skill in the realm of writing,” Connor said.
The appointment availability for the Writing Center for the summer 2026 semester is currently only virtual and by appointment only. The availability will increase in the spring and fall semesters for in-person and virtual tutoring and drop-in sessions.
Students can either make appointments or drop in for tutoring sessions.
SMART Center
Another support center at UNF is the SMART Center. The SMART Center offers tutoring, PASS sessions for Algebra and a study lounge in Building 15.
The SMART center offers statistics and math tutoring services for students. Students can get help with homework questions, test preparation, and get worksheets to practice on at home, according to the SMART website.
During the summer 2026 semester, the SMART Center is open for tutoring appointments in person and online for drop-ins, Monday through Friday, according to the SMART Center website.
The availability for the SMART Center in the spring and fall semesters has not yet been posted on the SMART Center website.
