UNF students de-stressed from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. while playing with puppies on the first floor of the Thomas G. Carpenter Library today, April 27.
UNF’s Public Relations Department partnered with Canine Companions for Independence to bring puppies on campus for the third semester in a row excluding summer.
Canine Companions is a national nonprofit organization that works to train golden retrievers, labrador retrievers and mixes of the two so that people with disabilities can have service dogs free of charge.
Golden retrievers are known for their loyalty and labrador retrievers are known for their work ethic. Canine Companions breeds these dogs in hopes of obtaining both qualities.
The dogs are bred in Santa Rosa, California and trained all over the United States.
Volunteers train the dogs from eight weeks to 18 months old by teaching them basic commands and exposing them to public places. The dogs then move on to advanced training where they learn functions such as opening a door.
For students who missed the event, it will take place next Fall and Spring semesters during respective finals weeks.
