The University of North Florida men’s basketball team shot its way into the Cancun Challenge championship game, with an 84-66 win over Prairie View A&M, Tuesday morning.
UNF (2-3) used career high performances from sophomore Jerron Granberry and junior transfer Jimmy Williams. Granberry put on a shooting display, scoring 20 points, while Williams pitched in 19 of his own.
The two were perfect from three-point range going a combined 9-for-9, Granberry making six, and Williams making three.
Junior forward Matt Sauey topped off the double-digit scorers for the Ospreys with 12 points.
The Ospreys never trailed in the game, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. They took a 14 point lead in to the half. The Osprey’s lead got as high as 30 points before the Panthers cut it down in garbage time in the second half.
UNF shot the ball good all night long. They recorded a 59 percent (30-51) shooting percentage for the game, including 11-of-17 from behind the arch.
They also won the rebounding and assist battle, two stats that head coach Matthew Driscoll put a lot of emphasis on. The outrebounded the Panthers 39-29 and dished out 17 assists.
The Ospreys will take on Morgan State Wednesday at 4 p.m. to decided the Cancun Challenge Championship.
