UNF Lacrosse has become a club team that is moving up the ranking and name recognition.

Now the team, ranked No. 22 in the MCLA D-II National Coaches poll, is in position to make a run in the SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference playoff in late April as an expected two-seed.

Before the team heads to Georgia for the playoffs, they are looking for help to fund their trip.

Michael Leary, UNF Lacrosse President, said that it has been a journey for the team over the years to return back to prominence.

“Hopefully we can come back to Jacksonville with a league trophy,” Leary said.

The team first cracked the D-II national poll’s top 25 this season in early March at 24. This was the first time the club had made the top 25 since 2009.

They are reaching their goal of $2,500  through a fundraiser hosted at the Flame Broiler along with personal donations through their website. These fundraisers are aimed to raise money for the travel to the playoffs primary, expenses for this season, and for preparation of future seasons.

“All donations go right back to our program,{and} help us fund the future season and the season we are currently in,” Leary said. “We have travel fees we have to pay, which adds up real quick, {because} travel is not really cheap.”

In the “donate” section on their website, Leary explains that donations would help offset the costs they face as they compete against teams outside of Jacksonville. As a club team, UNF Lacrosse only operates off of money provided by the team itself and receive no assistance from the school.

The lacrosse team competes in the SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference playoffs April 20-22.
