2020 democratic presidential candidate: Tulsi Gabbard
June 18, 2019
Age: 38
Experience: U.S. Representative from HI-02 (2013-present)
Fun Fact: Tulsi Gabbard is the first ever Hindu member of Congress.
Tulsi Gabbard rose to fame in 2016, when she stepped down as Vice Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee to endorse Bernie Sanders’ candidacy. This time, Gabbard is running against Sanders, with a campaign centered around anti-interventionist foreign policy. As a veteran of the Iraq War, Gabbard says she has seen the true cost of war first hand, and wants to get the United States out of conflicts in Syria, Iran, and Venezuela, among others. Gabbard has been adamant in her condemnation of “regime change” foreign policy.
Over the past few years, Gabbard has clashed with mainstream Democrats on a variety of issues. In 2017, she secretly visited Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on a “fact-finding” mission without notifying Democratic leadership. She then dismissed Assad’s opposition, including American-backed rebels, as “terrorists.” Following the recent release of the Mueller report, Gabbard once again went against her party’s status quo and said that it was time for Democrats to “put aside partisan interests” and “move forward.”
